InterOscitorTM

Free download!

The InterOscitorTM is a music creation tool that uses images from a video camera to generate real time MIDI sequences to control MIDI based synthesizers and other MIDI based devices.

What It Is!

Here's what the InterOscitorTM looks like in operation:

Images from your PC/web camera are converted into sounds in your computer.  As you move your hands or body in front of the camera the program follows you to create sound from your motion.

How It Works!

Here's a diagram of typical setup:

The input from your PC/web camera is processed with an edge detection algorithm to find the edges of your body.  Then the image is scanned along the left and right sides to place the controls (the black boxes in the picture above this one) at the edge of your body.  The position of the controls is converted into MIDI messages to control pitch and volume of the sounds in the built in music synthesizer in your sound card.

This drawing shows how you control the InterOscitorTM by moving your body or hands in front of a video camera in the area represented by the green vertical bars.

What It Does!

The InterOscitorTM is a fun and unusual addition for bands, stage productions, storefront attractions, studio productions, special effects, or just plain fun.  Anyone can play it.  Kids like seeing their edge detected image on the screen and playing with the sounds.  Professionals like it as a way to get away from the rigidity of machine created patterns and create MIDI sequences with an ambient freeform feel.

Here are some examples of the sounds you can create with an InterOscitorTM

SpookyWaver (mp3 File, 280KB)
PowerReactor (mp3 File, 916KB)
Screech (mp3 File, 518KB)
Drama (mp3 File, 491KB)
ModernDance (mp3 File, 273KB)

(Note that the mp3 file sounds include effects such as echo or reverb.)

Free Software!

Amiga Software

An early Amiga version of the InterOscitorTM is available for free download   It requires an Amiga 1000 with a serial port MIDI interface and a Live! video digitizer.  The Live! digitizer can be hard to find these days although used ones are still available.

A free download of a 3D graphics program called C-Light for the Amiga is also available.   C-Light is a ray tracer that builds objects from cubic, cylindrical, and spherical objects.
