Here's what the InterOscitorTM looks like in operation:
Images from your PC/web camera are converted into sounds in your computer. As you move your hands or body in front of the camera the program follows you to create sound from your motion. Here's a diagram of typical setup:
The input from your PC/web camera is processed with an edge detection algorithm to find the edges of your body. Then the image is scanned along the left and right sides to place the controls (the black boxes in the picture above this one) at the edge of your body. The position of the controls is converted into MIDI messages to control pitch and volume of the sounds in the built in music synthesizer in your sound card. This drawing shows how you control
the InterOscitorTM
by moving your body or hands in front of a video camera in the area represented
by the green vertical bars.
The InterOscitorTM is a fun and unusual addition for bands, stage productions, storefront attractions, studio productions, special effects, or just plain fun. Anyone can play it. Kids like seeing their edge detected image on the screen and playing with the sounds. Professionals like it as a way to get away from the rigidity of machine created patterns and create MIDI sequences with an ambient freeform feel. Here are some examples of the sounds you can create with an InterOscitorTM SpookyWaver (mp3
File, 280KB)
(Note that the mp3 file sounds include
effects such as echo or reverb.)
